A 3D model of a city shows you what is there. What do you do with that on the day a minister asks what happens if the ring road closes? A predictive twin joins data, visualisation and analytics, so it answers the question.

The framework is published and peer reviewed, in Future Generation Computer Systems (2023) and at the Internoise conference (2025). The computing layer speeds up both the data exchange between models and the calculations themselves.

Your questions answered

What is an urban digital twin?

A digital copy of a city that joins its data, its models and a visual map. A predictive twin goes further than a 3D model: it calculates what a change does to traffic, noise, air quality, accessibility, emissions and the power grid, so you can compare plans before you build.

What can we test with it?

Any intervention that changes how the city moves or is built: a road closure, a new district, a metro or bus line, a 30 km/h zone, an e-bus fleet and its charging, a parking policy, or the renewal of bridges and quay walls.

What data do we need to start?

The data your city already holds: road and public transport networks, land use, traffic counts and timetables. We build the twin from that and validate the results with your municipality before anyone relies on them.

Who uses the platform today?

Cities and regions such as Amsterdam, San Diego County, Singapore and Curaçao. The models come out of independent scientific research in the Netherlands and are published in peer-reviewed journals.

Do we need to install anything?

No. The platform runs in your browser. High-performance computing on the server recalculates the city while you change the plan.

Can our own team run it?

Yes. We train your planners and support them, so your team explores scenarios independently and we stay beside you.
